Overcoming my fear of sending cold emails

I am too precious about getting warm introductions to people that I do not know personally within organisations. It’s true that people give time to people they already know and trust over people they don’t know and trust. And so, it’s also true that people are more likely to ignore emails from people they don’t know. Yet, I hold a fear of that rejection too tightly.

So what if I have a service that accelerates and amplifies social impact. If I continue to only interact with people via warm introductions how many organisations will I truly be able to support with their social impact?

So today I have decided to get over my fear of sending cold emails, and I’m going to incorporate a technique of Daniel Pink’s to help me.

Just five more

I’m not going to pick an audacious goal or write a three month plan of action. I’m going to pick a tactic to energise action. One that is small yet powerful. The concept of just five more.

Every day I will cold email just five more people. I’ll work on improving the subject line and content of the email. If I want to email more people that day, fine, I’ll do it. But, I won’t email fewer.

The hard part will be for me to not get attached to responses and so I am going to focus on maintaining the goal of sending just five more emails each day, regardless of any replies I receive.

I’m not sure if it will work but there is no harm in trying. Who knows, by combing this action with the other lead generation techniques I know, perhaps I can scale impact for organisations I never knew personally before starting this process.
